Flip That Script is a common woman who lives, works and writes in Wellington, New Zealand. She is also a primary school teacher, mother, musician and a real qualified feminist. People do ask….’what makes you think you’re qualified to say…? – Actually, all women have minds and are free to speak. Or should be free to speak.
I encourage people to look closely and think deeply. We all live by certain scripts. They are drilled into us. So deeply embedded, we hardly notice them. If we take some time, to stop and reflect on why we think the way we do, or why a certain situation may have played out – we are better able to make sense of our realities, and engage with them. If no one is discussing, then no one is thinking.
The scripts we live by may be written by those around us, or by ourselves. Whatever the making, they can be stifling and restrictive however familiar and easy to follow they may be. All to often we resort to assumptions and stereotypes of people different to ourselves, or indeed of ourselves. It is important to recognise, that there are some people who never get a chance to write their own scripts. They are entirely drafted and edited by other people. Most of all, women’s scripts are written ‘for them’, even while in the womb.
I write from a feminist perspective, I can’t not. 51% of the worlds population are women. And history has never been on our side – we have be silenced. Women must be heard if there is any hope of equity, equality and quality in the lives we live. And feminism is not just for women, it is for children, for men who aren’t interested in their patriarchal-masculine-only scripts and of course – for all LGBTQ people. Feminism is for everyone. Regardless of who you are, feminism battles for a better life, in your honour.
History is constructed by those in power and history just repeats and repeats, unless we intervene, think and do differently. The actual script is, that many people are oppressed for the benefits of others – for very few, that women are the working underclass of the world, that gender and sexual variation is still seen as sinful, that indigenous peoples and victims of war still struggle under colonialism and occupation, and that not all children are afforded the care, rights and protections they so need. Patriarchy and capitalism reign. With all of this in mind, I recognise that I am very privileged, and as such I have a distinct responsibility to show feminism in its breadth and depth as a force to be reckoned with. To re-write the scripts. To flip them, exposing them for what they are.
The world needs more people seeing it through feminist eyes.
Flipping the script can be as simple as offering an alternative perspective to delving deeply into seldom explored pockets of our society. I hope the scripts I write bring new views to your horizon. I also hope they bring some recognition and acknowledgement, as well as some peace and calm to the lives that need it most.
“Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties.
Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions…for safety on the streets…for child care, for social welfare…for rape crisis centers, women’s refuges, reforms in the law.
If someone says, “Oh, I’m not a feminist,” I ask, “Why, what’s your problem?” – Dale Spender
